Writing Outside the Lines – Prompt 29

Ten Feet Tall and Bullet Proof

I have seen this picture posted on social media off and on for several months. I loved it the first time I saw it because it spoke to me how our lives can be anything we choose, dream, desire, and feel big enough to tackle.

While trying to determine how I wanted to approach this prompt, I kept hearing the song title Ten Feet Tall and Bullet Proof each time I looked at this picture. It also reminded me of a couple of dogs I had the honor to have in my life many years ago. One my own, miniature dachshund and the other a German Shepherd belonging to friends. My tiny little dog and this much larger one were best of friends much to our delight. They played hard together, ate together, slept together and we dog sat for one another when necessary much to the delight of these two wonderful dogs.

Each dog, my Cinnamon and Greta the German Shepherd belonging to my friends were special and amazing. Cinnamon thought she was a German Shepherd and acted like a much larger dog. Greta thought she was a Doxie and behaved like Cinnamon when they were together. Someone once told me that animals think they are the size and type of animal they are around. For Cinnamon and Greta this was true. They were both loyal to a fault to their humans and one another.

We can learn so much from our animals if we just take time to watch, listen and understand. They love unconditionally and completely those in their lives, human or other animals as we should our friends, neighbors, and the world at large.

The picture reminds me of Cinnamon who thought she would grow up to be a German Shepherd. Her heart was that big, but her body stayed true to her breed. She loved my father and there was a time in my life she had to live with him and my mother. They were best buddies going everywhere together. Cinnamon spread her own special charm and love everywhere she went, but if there seemed a threat or danger to her humans she didn’t hesitate to make her presence known.

Cinnamon and Greta both taught me love and courage at a time in my life when I desperately needed both. For that and to them I am ever grateful and will never forget the lessons I learned from these two amazing animals.

Cinnamon had a very sad ending to her life which to this day I cannot talk or write about. I lost touch with Greta’s family, but in my heart I know she life a long well loved life after they moved to Tennessee.

I am reminded over an over again that the smallest of us — human or animal — have the most courage and make the biggest differences in lives and the world. That is where true love, compassion and caring begin and continue — the world only needs to catch up and follow their lead.
